The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, whose conception was brought about the normal way, was conceived without original sin or its stain—that’s what "immaculate" means: without stain. Mary was preserved from these defects by God’s grace; from the first instant of her existence she was in the state of sanctifying grace and was free from the corrupt nature original sin brings.
IMPORTANT NOTE - Mary required a Savior. Like all other descendants of Adam, she was subject to the necessity of contracting original sin. But by a special intervention of God, undertaken at the instant she was conceived, she was preserved from the stain of original sin and its consequences. She was therefore redeemed by the grace of Christ, but in a special way—by anticipation.
Example - If you fall down a large hole in the ground while walking and you ask to be saved from perishing in the hole and I pull you out of the hole - you been saved. But if while walking you almost fall into the hole but I grab you before falling into the hole - you have been saved. It was simply anticipated by me that you were about to fall and I saved you.
Also remember - there is no concept of time with Christ like there is with us as people. Therefore God can anticipate the grace he bestows on his mother before she accepts the calling of her own free will.
Bottom line - if God wanted his mother to be perfect - could he not choose to do so? He is God after all!
