Changing Water Into Wine (John 2:1-11)
Yesterday we looked at a command to discipleship in the light of Mary's instruction to the servants at the wedding feast in Cana, thus, Do whatever He tells you. We established yesterday that the proclaimed 1st miracle of Jesus, 'Changing of water into Wine'is classified under nature miracles and it is also a 'miracle of feeding'.
In the face of this miracle of change, of transformation, there still remains some elements of permanence. The jars, the characters were not changed. Only the content of the jars was changed.
This change of water into wine signifies that there is a transforming power associated with Jesus. He changed the water of Judaism into the wine of Christianity, the water of Christlessness into the wine of the richness and the fullness of eternal life in Christ, the water of the law into the wine of the Gospel.
The six stone jars held water for Jewish ceremonial washing (purification rituals). The change of water into 'The Good Wine' (John 2:10) means that Jesus replaces all previous Jewish institutions and customs with his gift of salvation. The Good Wine symbolizes that Jesus' words and teachings are superior to Jewish teachings.
Jesus' teachings and manner of life portrays a perfect act of purification superior to the purification rituals of the Jews.
The wine may be a reference to the wine of the Lord's supper if we want to follow the double meaning pattern of John. This miracle took place at the nearness of the Passover (John 2:13), when Jesus would change wine into his Eucharistic blood two years later.
May this change from water into wine be for us a change of state from discomfort and pain into a state of comfort and joy and also lead to a conversion and replacement of old and hardened hearts with renewed and softened hearts and minds
Mary, Mother of Jesus, pray for us
AMEN
Pax et Bonum
