THANKSGIVING
by: Edmund Ackuaku
My brothers and sisters , the theme under discussion is Thanksgiving.
According to the A-Z dictionary, Thanksgiving is an act showing appreciation to someone or something for a good deed done.
In the first reading(2 Kings 5:14-17) and the Gospel (Luke 17:11-19) we are being faced with two great acts of Thanksgiving
Naaman after washing seven times in the Jordan as directed by Elisha, the prophet of God was healed of his predicament. He later returned to Elisha to thank him for healing him(Naaman). To his utter dismay, Elisha refused the gifts bought by Naamar as Thanksgiving showing Naaman to give thanks to God.
Also in the Gospel, Jesus healed ten lepers whom He ordered to go and see the chief priest. On their way they were all healed but only one of them returned to thank Jesus for healing them.
Now the question is : HOW OFTEN DO WE GIVE THANKS FOR GOOD DEEDS DONE UNTO US?
Immediately we are being helped out of a situation we at once forget the helper and give praise to mortals.
The foreigner who was among the ten healed lepers was the only one who returned. He gave thanks to Jesus. Jesus again blessed him. We accord praise and thanks to the wrong people and sometimes feel lazy or refuse to give thanks and when it happens again then we see ourselves seeking for help. The helper who helped you out first cannot help any longer because you are not appreciative.
We also err by accepting gifts and glories when we help a fellow. We want the whole world to know that we have done something applaudable. Thereby making ourselves smaller gods for people to come and seek help from. Let us remember that Christ said we should not let our left hands know what the right hand has done.
Brethren, if God does not want to mind us again because we are not appreciative we shall be left in the hands of the evil one and be devoured as a lion devours its preys.
Let us accord praise and give thanks to God only for He is the doer of all actions
Even if its a JUJU man who healed you, give thanks to God.
Giving thanks alone is itself a form of professing your faith in Christ Jesus.
May God help us to cultivate the habit of giving thanks to Him only and not accord praise to ourselves
AMEN
